Paper Shredding and Book Recycling
Paper Shredding and Book Recycling
The City of Albany Department of General Services sponsors two (2) FREE Paper Shredding events each year. Albany residents can bring documents to be shredded on-site. DGS also collects hard and soft-cover books for recycling. Books are NOT redistributed/reused.
Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be holding our October 2026 Paper Shredding and Book Recycling event.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns, please send us a message by clicking here or call us at 518-427-7480.
Please check back in early 2027 for the dates of the Spring and Fall 2027 Paper Shredding Events.
For alternative paper shredding options, please click the button below.
You must be a City of Albany resident to participate in the shredding events.
Please try to transport papers to be shredded in boxes, reusable totes, or paper bags. If requested, the empty boxes and bags can be returned once your paper has been dumped.
There is no limit on the amount of paper that you can bring for shredding however, we prefer it to be no more than one carload per household.
Before showing up, please perform the following pre-shred tasks:
- Please remove all paper from spiral bound notebooks and the metal spiral spine itself.
- To the best of your ability, please remove all metal paper clips and binders. I you would like to donate them for reuse we can take them at the event.
- Please check for other non paper items in your boxes and bags especially batteries which can cause fires in the paper shredding truck.
Accepted Items: All types of paper, checkbooks, notebooks, workbooks, envelopes, paper folders, magazines, catalogs and newspapers.
Not Accepted: Carbon paper, plastic folders, plastic wrapping, binders, CD's, VCR tapes, electronics, audio cassette tapes.
Participants will be guided by Department of General Services staff through a line of recycling carts. Participants do not need to leave their vehicles. DGS staff will remove any boxes and bags from participants vehicles and place the paper materials in one of the recycling carts along the line.
Participants have the option to personally view their paper materials being shredded. Participants wishing to do so will be directed to an area next to the paper shredding truck to park. They will then be walked over to the truck where there is a screen that will show their paper materials being shred.
